Hi everyone,

I have been asked to make a dining table top for a newly renovated kitchen and have run into a design problem. The clients have purchased two metal table bases which measure c. 56 cm at the bottom and have asked that I make the top just over 100cm wide. The bases are rather slender but weigh just under 45 lbs each.
The style of base is the classic coin type available from  www.tablebasefactory.com/bases.html

My question is: If I make the top as wide as they have requested, will the table be prone to tipping over? I have never built a table this large and have no idea what the size limits are for stability with this kind of base.

Any advice would be great, thanks in advance,

-Jake

Its funny you ask this. Some time ago I built a conference room table that was 121cm wide with 2 sets of legs that were 66cm. Day to day use the table is fine. The incident we did experience was a fellow to lazy to get a ladder decided to walk on the table to remove the projector from the ceiling. When he walked to the edge the table is started to tip. He realized it and moved quickly so there was no issue. So to your point there is a reason table bases are usualy as wide or almost as wide as the top.

The other issue is the end that attaches to the table is not alot of support should a few folks put their butts on the table

Wouldnt some wooden legs the right size look nicer anyway? or are they worried about peoples foot room? cost?
