I just purchased a 12" half blind jig from MLCS I'm supposed to be able to cut both pins and tails at the same time.  I'm using 1/2" 14degree bit, but it keeps burning the wood no matter how slow I go.  Should I have spent my money on a better jig?

Well its probably not the jig but your cutter and cutter speed. You may be going too slow. What kind of wood? Do you have a second router at your disposale?
